About

Kate Murnane (MSc, DPhil Oxon) is currently a Lecturer of Medicine and Junior Dean at the University of Oxford.

Currently finishing her graduate-entry medical studies at Oxford (accelerated BMBCh/MBBS), Kate was made a Baber medical scholar for 2 consecutive years (2023 and 2024). In 2024, Kate received the Keasbey grant in recognition of her post-doctoral research on thrombophilias in pregnant women which she presented at BSH 2024. Alongside her studies, Kate is pursuing a post-doc in social care economics at Green-Templeton College Oxford, funded by Care Dorset and GTC, where her areas of interest include health inequalities, the role of women in informal care and social care delivery in the Global South.

Prior to clinical school, Kate developed a strong medico-sciences background while completing her DPhil, also at Oxford, on paediatric B-cell leukaemias, publishing her primary research in Nature - the world-leading journal for scientific research. During her PhD, Kate was awarded the prestigious WIMM-UKRI Medical Research Council scholarship and won numerous academic prizes worth over £120,000, including the Higgs Haematology prize. Kate’s prior research interests include HIV immunology and viral structure as well as Glycogen Storage Disorders, for which she was funded by the British Society for Cell Biology (BSCB).

Outside of her studies, Kate actively volunteers for The Oxford Refugee Health Initiative to help displaced families access healthcare. Previously, Kate was Vice-President of the Oxford Feminist Society, Sub-editor of The Oxford Scientist and committee member for the University’s Amnesty International society.

Kate’s corporate roles have included life sciences consultancy for a national policy group which produced parliamentary COVID-19 briefings, healthcare and EDI consultancy for numerous think-tanks and organisations. She recently attended PwC/Strategy &’s Insight into Consulting programme.
